Children and Young People - Wingate and Station Town Family Centre

The Wingate and Station Town Family Centre aims to promote quality of life to residents within the community of Wingate and surrounding areas, by identifying needs and effective resources to develop confidence, self-esteem and knowledge.

County Durham Foundation has donated over £60,000, a total of 29 separate grants in support of The Family Centre. The funds have been used to help with wages, purchase computer hardware and software, provide training and activity breaks. One such grant was used to provide a four-week holiday play scheme for children aged between the ages of 2-16, providing a range of activities for each age group.

The provision of this play scheme has enabled young people from deprived areas to enjoy activities they would otherwise not be able to access. Inclusion of young people with special needs and disabilities has raised self-esteem and self-worth.

The Family Centre also received funding to offer local people a training session on the anatomy of prejudice, inequality and discrimination. The training helped to assist the prevention of anti-social behaviour. Alison Nutter, head of the centre has this to say, “You have enabled us to bring people together to form a shared vision, thank you for all your support”.
