Durham Chinese School

The Chinese School was set up with the aim of helping the Chinese population in Durham integrate fully into the community.

In recent years the Chinese population in Durham has grown. Many come to the region as students at the University and then choose to stay in the area with their families once their studies are complete. The group, which is based in Gilesgate Community Centre, organises numerous events and classes that enable local children and families to gain a better understanding of Chinese culture. One of their most established classes is the Sunday Language class, which is open to children of all backgrounds. This not only helps Chinese children practise their mother tongue but also gives other children the chance to learn a new language.

We gave the School £7,000 which will enable them to run a series of open days to teach the wider community about healthy living and Chinese culture.

These events were open to the whole community with a focus on children and young people. Professional tutors, musicians and artists were also involved.

The first event of the year has already taken place in Elvet Methodist Church in Durham City to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Festivities were kicked off by a colourful Lion Dance, which was followed by a traditional craft workshop including classes and demonstrations in calligraphy and silk painting. Children were also invited to make their own New Year decorations. The main event of the day was a concert of music and dance performed by both professionals and children. Visitors were also invited to try a variety of authentic Chinese food.

One volunteer expressed her thanks:

"Thank you, we really appreciate your help. These kinds of events are helping to make people aware of the Chinese population in Durham and as a result our community is really glowing. You have made this possible."

Through events like these the Durham Chinese School is providing members of the Chinese community with the confidence to participate more fully in the social and cultural environment in which they live.
